PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 17-3 victory over the Hartwick College Hawks Friday afternoon at Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher picks up an Empire 8 to improve to 2-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall. Hartwick falls to 8-5 on the season (3-3 E8).
Fisher had no trouble finding the back of the net as beginning at the 25:40 mark, the Cardinals scored three in less than a minute. Over the first 7:45 Fisher found itself with a 5-0 lead, three of the goals coming from
Morgan Young. Hartwick cashed in one of their own, but Fisher retaliated with a three-goal run to follow. At the half, the home side found itself up 10-2.
The second half was much of the same for Fisher, as the Cardinals pounded in seven more goals compared to the Hawks' one.
Offensively,
Jordan Johnson led the squad with eight points. Six of those points came on assists, which set a new single game record for the College's career-assists record holder. Young led all players on the day in the goal scoring category with her three.
Cori Holbrook also nabbed three points, hers on two goals and a dime.
Also scoring for the Cardinals on the day was
Jenna Lippert (2),
Maria Hristodoulou (2),
Molly Rourke (2),
Kelsie Schindler (1),
Mallory Eymer (1),
Olivia Marziale (1),
Mackenzie LeVan (1) and
Jamie Wallace (1).
On the draw, Fisher dominated, winning 19 of the 22 chances.
Claire Bollin controlled a team-high five and was followed closely by Holbrook's four.
Defensively, the Cardinals locked it in preventing Hartwick from clearing the ball all day. The squad held the Hawks to just 50% (9-18) on clear attempts, 17 percent fewer than what they normally average.
Although they didn't see much action,
Hayley Peets and
Morgan Hayes split time in net with Peets playing the first half and Hayes the second.
Women's lacrosse will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday as the team will square off in a home battle against Utica College.
