CORTLAND, N.Y. – After locking up the No. 3 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team dropped a hard fought non-conference match to SUNY Cortland in five sets 27-25, 17-25,25-23,19-25,7-15. The Cardinals move to 21-8 overall, while the Red Dragons improve to 12-14 on the season.
Senior
Madison Karwas led the way offensively for the Cardinals finishing with a season-high 15 kills, while
Anna Marcy notched 11 and
Katie Mazierski pitched in 10.
Fisher was able to hold off a late seven-point run by Cortland to tie the set at 24, until Mazierski notched two kills to win the first set. The second set went to the Red Dragons with the help of timely service aces. However, the
Cardinals rallied back in the third set after trailing 18-11 by going on a 7-0 run to tie it up at 18. Both sides traded points until it was 23-23. Finally, Fisher capped off the set with two Cortland errors to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Red Dragons rallied to take the final two sets and the match.
Rebecca Hay and
Molly Taylor each finished with 19 and 17 assists, respectively, at the setter position.
Defensively for the Cardinals,
Elise Kreuz led the way with 26 digs, while Mazierski posted 25 and Karwas added 15.
The Cardinals are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they travel to Wells College to take part in the Wells College Invite for their final regular season match of the 2017 season.
