PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team scored a season-high eight goals on Tuesday night as the Cardinals made quick work of Oswego State, 8-1, in a non-conference game at Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher moved to 13-3 on the season while the Lakers fell to 5-10 to close out their 2017 regular season.
The team's eight-goal outburst marked the most it has scored since October 25, 2016 when the Cardinals defeated the Lakers by an identical score, 8-1. Furthermore, senior forward
Emily Markarian tied two program records in the win with four goals and eight points overall.
After nearly 11 minutes of play, Fisher struck first when Markarian sent a shot that found the left corner of the goal to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Fisher would double its advantage in the 28th minute as Markarian caused a turnover deep in Oswego's zone before burying a shot into the back of the goal to make it 2-0 in Fisher's favor. Less than three minutes later, Markarian struck again after weaving her way through the Lakers' defense before uncorking a shot through Oswego's goalie's legs for a 3-0 Cardinals' advantage.
With time winding down in the first half, Markarian made it a four-goal affair in the 33rd minute after deflecting a pass from
Lexi Foley and into the corner of the goal.
Coming out of the break, Fisher continued to apply the pressure as
Bre Socker blasted a shot by the Lakers' keeper in the 39th minute to stake the home team to a 5-0 edge.
After swapping possessions over the next several minutes,
Lindsay Scott tallied her sixth goal of the season after coming up with a steal inside the Lakers' zone to put the game at 6-0 midway through the second period.
Up by large margin, Fisher tacked on two more goals in span of just over two minutes with
Lauren Fazio and
Kelly Bergamo doing the honors before Oswego recorded its lone goal of the contest in the 70th minute to make it an 8-1 contest.
Overall, Fisher surrendered just two shots in 70 minutes on the defensive end of the field. Offensively, the Cardinals peppered Oswego with a season-high 33 shots in all including 20 on goal. Socker led the way with nine shots while Scott hammered eight overall. Markarian had six shots to her credit.
In goal,
Ashley Maynard earned her 13th win of the season after 35 minutes of scoreless play before being lifted for
Lexi Kaplan who closed out the contest.
Fisher will return to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday when it travels to Ithaca to face the Bombers in a non-conference bout.
