PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell in double overtime, 1-0 to the Saxons of Alfred University on Senior Day. The Cardinals fall to 4-12-1 overall, while dropping to 1-5-1 in the Empire 8. The Saxons jump to 6-7-3 o the year, while advancing to 2-2-2 in conference play.
At the half, Fisher led the offensive charge, outshooting the Saxons, 9-3. Jackie Romano led the way in the first 45 minutes, registering three total shots, while Emily Murray and Elise Olivo added two shots of their own.
The Cardinals best scoring opportunity when Hannah Buschner ricocheted a shot off the Saxons goalkeeper, with the rebound finding the feet of Tara Marcello who would take the shot, resulting in a diving stop by the Alfred keeper.
The Fisher defense held strong only allowing three shots in the half, with strong play from Mia Tirabassi, Nora Broderick and Tara Marcello.
Fisher came within inches of a goal when Romano sent a shot sailing in the 88th minute, hitting the top cross bar, keeping the game at zero apiece.
The Cardinals kept the pressure rolling, finishing out regulation with 21 total shots. Romano and Olivo both blasted a season-high six shots as the second half came to a close.
The first overtime period would not do it, as the Cardinals and Saxons stayed drawn at zero, forcing a second overtime period. Romano, Kerri Orbach and Alison Menges all tallied a single shot in the first overtime.
The deciding goal would come in the 107th minute, when an Alfred player ripped a shot from 15 yards out, tipping off the hands of McGowan, where her teammate would be there to gather the rebound and head the ball in just out of McGowan's reach.
Fisher finished with an impressive 27 shots on the day, 20 of these being on net. Romano would finish with eight shots, while Olivo added six and Murray added five on the day.
McGowan would suffer the loss in net, only having to make a single save on the day, as the Cardinals held Alfred to just five shots.
The Cardinals close out their regular season at 3:30 on Tuesday as the team travels to Elmira to face the Soaring Eagles in a final Empire 8 matchup.
