PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team shut out the visiting SUNY New Paltz 3-0 for its ninth consecutive victory on Saturday. With the win the Cardinals improve to 9-1 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 4-6.
The reigning Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the week, goalkeeper
Ashley Maynard was credited with the win improving her record to 9-1 on the season. The junior completed her second consecutive shutout and made 10 saves to keep the Cardinals ahead on the scoreboard for the duration of the game.
The Cardinals struck quickly in the first period as
Bre Socker caused a New Paltz turnover and took the ball to the middle of the box and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper for her ninth tally of the season with just shy of nine minutes gone by.
Just under three minutes later at the 11:25 mark,
Emily Markarian scored her 14
th of the season as she capitalized on her own rebound in front of the net to give Fisher a 2-0 edge.
Fisher added to its lead at the 59:35 mark of the second period as
Lindsay Scott took a pass from Socker off of a corner and laced a shot through a crowd and into the bottom left corner of the goal.
As a team, the Cardinals finished with 15 shots on goal compared to New Paltz's 10.
Fisher is back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday under the lights at Growney Stadium as they host the University of Rochester for another non-conference battle.
