The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team earned its first Empire 8 win of the season, downing Alfred University by a score of 82-56 Saturday afternoon on the road. With the win, Fisher improves to 4-7 on the season and .500 (1-1) in the Empire 8. Alfred drops to 2-10 overall, 0-3 in conference play.
After scoring the first bucket, the Cardinals never floundered as they kept the lead for the entirety of the game. Fisher found itself up by nearly 20 at the half and got up by as much as 30 late in the fourth.
It was dominant paint play on both sides of the ball that led the Cardinals to victory. Fisher outrebounded the Saxons by 24 (57-33) on the day, 25 of which were offensive. The 57 total was also the most the team has accumulated since a game against Alfred University in 2011. Offensively, Fisher also combined for 46 points in the paint, compared to Alfred's 26.
Jessica Rhone was all over the place during the contest as she led all players on the court in points (20) and rebounds (9). The junior's 20 points also set a new career-high.
Also pitching in offensively for the Cardinals was
Maria Kelleher, who scored 13 and
Alyssa Robens, who collected 10 (also a career high).
Ball distribution came from down low during this game as forwards
Caroline Robertson (5) and
Nicole Robinson (4) led the team in assists.
Fisher will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as it hosts Elmira College in Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
