An
Alex Sausville three-pointer with just seconds on the clock gave the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team its second-straight Empire 8 victory as the team took down Alfred University 64-61 on Saturday afternoon. Fisher is now 7-4 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in conference play. Alfred is handed its first conference loss of the season (2-1) and is now 5-7 overall.
Tied at 59s with 37 seconds left, Sausville drove to the basket to put the Cardinals ahead by two points. The Saxons answered back though, hitting a pair of free throws with just over 20 ticks on the clock. With the shot clock off and time winding down, Sausville rose to the occasion once again as
Michael D'Amico found him on the perimeter. The junior heaved up a shot that found the bottom of the net, giving Fisher the 64-61 lead with just five seconds left in regulation. The Cardinals' defense would then hold, earning the team another important conference victory.
It was a close battle the entire game with five lead changes throughout the 40 minutes. No team went up by double-digits as well, with Fisher up by eight midway through the second half being the largest deficit.
Aside from the final minute of the game, it was the
Jake Haight and
Keegan Ryan show for the Cardinals. Haight went 7-of-8 from the field, notching 17 points for a new career high. Ryan played steady all game, chipping in 13 of his own. The two also led the team in rebounds with Haight amassing nine and Ryan eight.
Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday as it hosts Elmira College in Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
