PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Four different players scored in double figures as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team remained unbeaten in Empire 8 play with a 76-67 win over visiting Ithaca College on Thursday night on Bobby Wanzer Court inside Manning and Napier Gymnasium. The win moved Fisher's overall mark to 8-4 and 3-0 in the conference standings while the Bombers fell to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 against Empire 8 opponents.
Keegan Ryan led all scorers with 21 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds marking the 36th double-double of his career.Â
Alex Sausville contributed 13 points overall while
Tyler English finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals in the win.Â
Ryan Henderson added 11 points and seven boards.
As a team, the Cardinals shot 24-of-60 (.400) from the floor and knocked down 23 free throws overall. Fisher held Ithaca's offense, which entered the game leading the conference in scoring this season, to just 67 points on 22-of-63 shooting (.349). Defensively, Fisher forced Ithaca into 16 turnovers and came away with seven steals in all.
Fisher opened the game with a 9-2 run book-ended by 3-pointers from
Michael D'Amico and English but the Bombers responded with five quick points of their own to make it 9-7 at 17:24. As the half wore on, the Cardinals took control of the momentum and opened up a double-digit lead courtesy of a 10-0 run capped by five points from Henderson to make it 31-18 with 4:53 left in the half.
Ithaca would cut the lead to 10 points, 33-23, after scoring seven on the game's next nine points including an old-fashioned 3-point play, but Fisher would push its advantage back to 16 after scoring six unanswered in a span of 61 seconds en route to a 40-28 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals carried over their momentum and used a 7-0 run to start the half before building a 21-point edge with seven baskets inside the paint, 60-39, with 9:37 left to play.
Ithaca would hang around, however, after burying a couple of timely 3-pointers to make it a 12-point affair, 66-54, but Fisher would connect on 10 free throws down the stretch to keep the Bombers at bay and earn the critical conference win.
The Cardinals will return to the court at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel east to take on the Utica College Pioneers in another Empire 8 bout.
