The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team kicked off 2017 with a victory as the squad dropped Swarthmore College 75-61 in the first game of the Gettysburg Tournament on Monday night. With the win, the Cardinals now post a record of 3-5.
After a slow first quarter, the Cardinals turned on their offense, pouring in 21 points in the second stanza. The offensive explosion was surged by
Jessica Rhone, who tied her career high with 13 points, all in the first half. Fisher would go into halftime with a 37-24 lead.
The defense was stifling all game (four Cardinals recorded two steals), but no more than in the third as Fisher held the Garnets to only six points. With a sizable lead going into the fourth, the Cardinals never squandered, leading by as many as 21 at one point.
Caroline Robertson led all scorers on the floor as the junior netted 18 points, tying her season high.
Emily Piacentini also chipped in with 13 and the previously-mentioned Rhone.
In the backcourt, Piacentini,
Alex Reigle and
Erin Hulbert combined for 12 of Fisher's 18 assists.
Underneath the basket, Rhone collected nine rebounds while Robertson pitched in 8.
Fisher will take on host Gettysburg College at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
