Two first half goals led to a 2-1 win for the St. John Fisher College field hockey team over SUNY Cortland at Growney Stadium Tuesday night. With the victory, the Cardinals move back to .500 (2-2) on the year, while Cortland goes to 3-2.
A set piece at 20:40 in the first half resulted in the first goal for the Cardinals. Fisher earned a corner that was taken by
Lauren Fazio on the goalkeeper's right side. She sent a pass up to
Kelly Bergamo who in turn took a rip a shot towards goal. The ball took a deflection of
Nickole Morgan's stick giving her her first goal of the season and giving Fisher the 1-0 lead.
Fisher was then able to double its lead just under nine minutes later.
Hannah Cooper got the play in motion, sending a long stretch pass down the middle of the field. Bergamo picked it up and had a free shot at the netminder, which she converted into a goal. Cortland would get one back late in the second half, but a stingy Fisher defense held off the Red Dragons for the win.
In goal,
Ashley Maynard kept a clean sheet for nearly 57 minutes, finishing the night with seven saves.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday as it heads to Utica for its first taste of conference play.
