The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team looks to defend its title and capture its fifth straight Empire 8 Conference Championship this weekend, held at Ithaca College.
Last season, Fisher won its fourth straight title defeating Ithaca 10-5, and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Cardinals fell to the No. 7 College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the second round of the NCAA Championship, closing out the season ranked 19th nationally.
Three-seeded Fisher will take on No. 2 seeded Stevens Institute of Technology at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday just after top seeded Ithaca takes on fourth-seed Nazareth College at 11 a.m. Sunday's final will feature the winners of both semifinal games and will be held at 12 p.m.
Fisher vs Stevens
Fisher heads into the tournament 14-3 overall, and 6-2 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals suffered a 9-8 loss to Stevens two weeks ago in their first matchup of the season. The game was tied 4-4 at the half, and Fisher scored two to open the second taking a 6-4 lead, as Stevens tied the game up again with just 1:45 left on a free position goal. The Ducks would take possession on a Fisher turnover, and took the lead with less than a minute left to play. Fisher won the ensuing draw, but the shot by
Cori Holbrook with just 10 seconds remaining would result in a save, preserving the Stevens lead at 9-8.
Stevens enters the weekend with a 10-6 overall record, and 6-2 in the Empire 8, with losses to Ithaca and Nazareth.
