The St. John Fisher College softball team fell 2-0 to the University of Texas at Tyler in the first game of the NCAA Division III Softball College World Series on Thursday. Fisher will have another chance to remain in the national championship tournament in tomorrow.
Fisher and UTT were scoreless through two innings as freshman
Sarah Kubik recorded the first hit of the game for the Cardinals on a single to centerfield in the top of the second. The Patriots would put two runs on the board in the third inning on a two-run home run that would give UTT the 2-0 lead that held through the next four innings.
The Cardinals would have just one more hit in the sixth inning from
Julia Sortisio, followed shortly by an error by the Patriots that led
Katie Mazierski to first base.
Ashley Prince grounded out on the following play ending the inning.
Both pitchers threw seven innings as
Lindsey Thayer only gave up four hits, while UTT pitcher Kelsie Batton gave up just two. Each of them struck out nine total batters.
Fisher will face the University of St. Thomas-Minnesota on Friday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
