Softball Stays Alive With Win Over St. Thomas

The St. John Fisher College softball team stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Softball College World Series with a 2-0 win over the University of St. Thomas-Minnesota on Friday in Salem, Virginia.

With the win, Fisher ties the most wins in program history with 39.

The teams were scoreless through five innings, but Fisher was aggressive at the plate putting runners on base in the first, second, third, and fifth innings. In the bottom of the second the Tommies had runners on first and third with no outs as the runner on third was caught in a run-down tagged out by Karlie Neale for the first out of the inning. With the go-ahead run still at first pitcher Lindsey Thayer nailed back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning leaving St. Thomas scoreless.

Katie Mazierski was able to reach second on a two-base error by the Tommies in the third inning, as Neale earned a walk shortly after on a nine-pitch at bat. The Cardinals could not come up with a run as Sarah Kubik flied out to right field on the ensuing at bat.

However, Kubik would come up clutch in the sixth inning hitting a solo home run to give Fisher its first lead in the College World Series at 1-0.

Fisher tacked on one insurance run in the top of the seventh after back-to-back singles from Julia Sortisio and Mazierski as Ashley Prince sent an RBI single up the middle, scoring Sortisio.

Prince went 3-for-4, Mazierski went 2-for-4, and Kubik finished 2-for-3.

Thayer had another strong playoff performance in the circle, striking out seven batters, while only allowing two hits from her opponents.

The Cardinals will square off against the loser of Messiah/MIT tomorrow at 11 a.m.
