The St. John Fisher College softball team continues its journey to a national championship title after defeating Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1-0 on Saturday morning.
Sophomore pitcher
Lindsey Thayer was credited with her 30
th win on the season, and struck out 14 batters in the contest, the highest strikeout count thus far in the 2016 DIII Softball College World Series.
Thayer's 14 strikeouts give her 456 on the season and 750 for her career, passing Amanda Herberger for first place on the College's career list.
This contest marked the 26th time the sophomore has struck out 10 or more batters this season and the 44th time in her career. It was also her eighth complete-game one-hitter of the year and 14th shutout of the season.
With the win, the 2016 Cardinals have set the new record for wins in a season, marking the first time Fisher has reached the 40-win plateau.
Neither team would score through the first four innings, but Fisher had a chance in the third to put a run on the board after
Kristina Balsano doubled to open the inning.
Katie Mazierski singled shortly after, and
Ashley Prince was hit with a pitch to load the bases, but
Jennifer Knaak would foul out to end the inning.
Fisher came back swinging in the fourth inning as
Sarah Kubik reached first on a fielding error, on the ensuing at bat
Lauren Owens doubled to left center, scoring Kubik to put Fisher's only run on the board.
The Cardinals held MIT for the next three innings to complete the 1-0 win and advance to the next game where they will rematch against the University of Texas at Tyler.
