Thayers Strikes Out 20 Of A Possible 21 To Lead Fisher In DH Sweep

Sophomore Lindsey Thayer set a new St. John Fisher College softball record for strikeouts in a game with 20 in a seven-inning 4-0 win over Rochester Institute of Technology on Thursday. Thayer earned 20 of a possible 21 outs via the strikeout with the only other out coming on a foul out to right in the seventh inning.   Thayer, who allowed just two singles and one walk during the game, broke her own record of 19 strikeouts, which set twice this year, most recently, just two days ago in a 2-0 win over Keuka College.

In the nightcap, freshman pitcher Monica Moses went all seven innings and held on for the 6-5 victory to earn her first win at the collegiate level.

With the two wins, Fisher, currently ranked No. 20 in the latest national coaches poll, improves to 19-5 overall.  The Cardinals will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Elmira College.

Game One – Fisher 4, R.I.T. 0

Fisher scored runs in all the even innings, providing Thayer with for-than-enough offense to record her seventh shutout of the season in the complete-game win.
Lauren Owens got Fisher on the board with a double to score freshman Ashley Prince in the second inning.  In the fourth, Genevieve Paeglow ripped a two-run double to put the Cardinals up 3-0.  Katie Mazierski knocked in another run for Fisher in the sixth.

Prince, Paeglow and Owens each finished with two hits, while Prince also scored two runs in the win.

Game Two – Fisher 6, R.I.T. 5
Moses allowed 10 hits and fanned seven over seven innings to earn her first win, but it came in dramatic fashion.  The freshman gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game, but ended the contest with a strikeout and runners on second and third.

Trailing 3-2 after four innings, Fisher tacked on two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Following a triple from freshman Julia Sortisio, classmate Prince singled and scored on a double from another freshman, Sarah Kubik.

In the sixth, Fisher used two hits and two RIT errors to score two runs.

Prince led Fisher with three hits, while Sortisio scored two runs.  Jennifer Knaak drove in two runs as well, while Katie Mazierski and Sam Schermerhorn each singled and scored a run.
