A ninth inning comeback by the St. John Fisher College baseball team fell short as Fisher dropped a 9-7 decision to Neumann University on Wednesday in Winter Haven, Florida.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 3-3 on the season while the win bolsters the Knights' record to 2-3.
Â
Fisher fell behind 3-0 early in the contest as Neumann picked up three runs in the top of the first inning including a triple that drove in the second and third runs.
Â
After allowing another score in the top of the fourth, Fisher finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame. That was when
Victor Konstantinovsky's sacrifice fly drove
Jack Trotman home to make it a 4-1 game in favor of the Knights.
Â
The Cardinals fell behind further as Neumann responded by tacking on one run each in the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to go up 7-1.
Tom Kline reached home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Cardinals, making it a 7-2 game.
Â
Then in the ninth, the Knights added two more scores to take a seemingly comfortable 9-2 lead.
Â
It was in the bottom of the last inning however that the Fisher bats came alive for a furious comeback. A Kline single to drive
Frank Carnevale home kicked-off the bottom half of the frame. Then,
Chris Dugan scored on an error by the first baseman, followed up by a
Mike Roman triple that drove in Kline and
Nate Roethel. Just minutes later Roman found home on a wild pitch, making it just a two-run game at 9-7.
Â
After walking Trotman and needing two outs, Neumann put a halt on the comeback by picking off Trotman and retiring the last batter to hold on for the victory.
Â
Kline led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Roman also picked up two hits in the game (2-for-4) while tallying two RBI and a run.
Â
Carnevale and Dugan each went 1-for-1 in their only plate appearances while Trotman and
Cody Wiktorski each went 1-for-4 batting for the day.
Â
Erin Moskal started on the mound for Fisher and saw 3.1 innings of action allowing four runs on four hits while striking out one batter.
Â
Up next for the Cardinals is a 2:30 p.m. Thursday rematch against Ohio Northern University from Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida. Earlier this week, Fisher fell to the Polar Bears 9-4 in Monday's contest at Lake Myrtle Complex.
