Nick Papayanakos scored his fourth goal of the game with 52.2 seconds left in regulation to snap a 9-9 tie and lift the St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse program to 10-9 win over host Oswego State University on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher improves to 3-2 overall, while the Lakers fall to 2-3.
It was a back-and-forth affair that features seven lead changes and six ties.
Trailing 2-1 after the opening quarter, Fisher scored three straight goals - one from
Matthew Condon and two from Papayanakos - to give the Cardinals a 4-2 edge with 8:59 left in the second. After an Oswego goal,
Drew Brown scored to put the Cardinals up 5-3 with 7:39 left, but Oswego scored the final two goals of the half, knotting the game at 5s.
Condon scored his second goal of the day in the opening minute of the second half, but the Lakers would keep the Cardinals at bay for the remaining of the period and took a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Fisher erupted for three goals in the first five minutes of the fourth, including two from senior
Gary Bova to give the Cardinals a 9-7 lead.
The Lakers came right back and tied the game up with two goals in a 33-second span, making it 9-9 with 9:29 left.
The Fisher defense kept the Lakers off the board for the remainder of the game, with goalie
Tanner Swan making two of his eight saves in the final seven minutes.
With the 30-second shot-clock nearly at zero Fisher finally found the back of the net, with Papayanakos scoring off a pass from Condon.
Papayanakos led the Cardinals with five points and six ground balls. Condon tallied three points on two goals and one assists, while
Andrew Rosso (one goal, two assists) also totaled three points.
Ricky Barton finished the game with five ground balls, a team-high three caused turnovers and one assists.
Kevin O'Donnell won 10 face offs and scooped up four ground balls.
Fisher returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at SUNY Geneseo.
