Softball Clinches Two Wins In Florida

The St. John Fisher College softball team earned its first two wins of the year over John Carroll University and Wartburg College on Monday afternoon hosted at Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida.

Fisher 2, John Carroll 1 (7 innings)

Lindsey Thayer struck out 14 of 26 batters faced, limiting John Carroll to just five hits in the seven inning game.

With the win, Thayer captures her first win of the season as Fisher advances to 2-0 on the day.

The Cardinals totaled six hits, three of which came in the top of the fourth inning when Fisher scored both its runs. After a double from Katie Mazierski and a base hit from Jennifer Knaak, Lauren Owens drove home Mazierski. On the next at bat, Karlie Neale had the RBI to bring in Knaak, ending the scoring for the Cardinals, and securing the win.

Mazierski went 2-for-4 scoring one run.

Fisher 9, Wartburg 1 (5 innings)

The Cardinals combined for five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to top Wartburg College 9-1 in the second game of the evening.

Halie Schoff struck out 7 of 33 batters faced, and clinched her first win of the season.

Fisher was on the board early in the top of the first when Danielle Ventrone walked, sending Mazierski home for the first run of the game.

The Cardinals would go on to score three runs in the top of the second beginning with a stolen base by Mazierski, where Sorsito was sent home on an overthrow from the catcher. With the bases loaded, Kubik walked, forcing Mazierski home. Reaching on an error Karlie Neale RBIs to send Ownes home, extending the lead to 5-1.

Sorsito doubled to left center early in the fourth with 2 RBI, and in the fifth Sarah Kubik sent one home with a double to left center.

Lauren Owens led the team going 2-for-3 with two scored runs.

Fisher is back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. as they take on Johnson & Wales and Mount Union at Legends Way Ballfields.
