Basketball teams from all around the Rochester area will be playing for something other than wins this weekend as four schools and eight programs (four men's, four women's) will be competing in the first-ever Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. The tournament, which aside from St. John Fisher College, will include Nazareth College, the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology, will host a toy drive to benefit the refugee children through Mary's Place.
Tip-off for the women's tournament, which is to be played at Fisher's Manning and Napier Gymnasium, will be a 6 p.m. on Friday with Nazareth and RIT squaring off followed by a bout between the host Cardinals and Rochester. Play will spill into Saturday as the Golden Flyers and Yellowjackets will go to battle in the 6 p.m. contest with Fisher and RIT competing in the following game.
On the men's side, which will be played at Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium, play will begin with a Fisher Rochester contest at 6 p.m. The Cardinals will then pick up play the following day at the same time but will face off against the Tigers of RIT.
Attendees who bring an unwrapped toy will enjoy free admission to the games. Suggested toys for younger children include board games, Legos, sports equipment (soccer balls, basketballs, and footballs), stuffed animals, and dolls. For older children, iTunes gift cards, bath and body products, sports equipment, hair accessories, socks, and blankets are also welcome. All toys collected will be distributed to children from the Rochester refugee community through Mary's Place.
