The St. John Fisher College men's basketball program suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday, as the Cardinals dropped an 85-75 decision to host College of Wooster. With the loss, Fisher falls to 3-1 overall, while the Fighting Scots, ranked No. 7 in the latest national poll, improves to 3-1.
Both teams founded their groove on the offensive end for the first 20 minutes. Fisher shot 53.1% from the floor in the first half, but trailed 50-44, as Wooster connected on 17-of-31 attempts from the floor.
The second half was a defensive struggle for both teams. The Scots enjoyed a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but Fisher rallied in the final three minutes. The Cardinals trailed 79-67 with 2:45 left, but made it two-possession game after buckets from
Tyler Farrell,
Dennis Hare and
Daniel Morales, pulling Fisher to within six at 79-73 with 1:45 left.
Fisher, however, wouldn't get any closer as Wooster sealed the game at the foul line.
Fisher shot just 25% from the floor in the second half and was 16-of-31 (51.6%) from the foul line in the final period.
For Fisher, senior All-American
Keegan Ryan tallied his third double-double, finishing with 19 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Tyler English added 14 points, while
Alex Sausville chipped in with 13 points. Morales scored all seven of his points in the second half, while Hare totaled eight points, six rebounds and a team-high three steals.
James Leone finished with six points and four rebounds.
Fisher returns to action at 6 p.m. on Friday and will face University of Rochester at Nazareth Colllege.
