Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fisher Rallies In OT For First Win Of Season

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball program went on a 9-0 run over the game's final moments, as the Cardinals rallied for a 56-52 win in overtime at Union College on Saturday night.

With the win, Fisher earns its first victory of the season and improves to 1-2 overall, while the Dutchwomen fall to 1-2.   Fisher returns to action at 6 p.m. on Sunday and will host Medaille College.

Trailing 52-47 with 1:10 left in overtime, Maria Kelleher drained a 3-pointer to make it at one-possession game.  After forcing a turnover on the defensive end, senior Emily Piacentini tied the game up at 52s on a layup with 53 seconds left.

Eleven seconds later, freshman Alex Reigle was fouled after stealing the ball and converted on both free throw attempts to put the Cardinals up for good.  Both Piacentini and Kelleher made free throws in the closing moments, while the defense kept Union off the board.

It wasn't a pretty start for the Cardinals, who shot 19% from the floor in the first half.  After trailing 9-4 early in the first quarter, Fisher tied it up at 9s at the end of the opening period, and took its first lead of the day at 11-9 just 15 seconds in the second quarter, but only scored two points after that.

Union led 18-13 at the half, but Fisher held the Dutchwomen scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter, with Caroline Robertson's layup with 4:42 left in the third, giving her team a 19-18 edge.

With the game tied at 22s, Piacentini hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 26 seconds of the third quarter to put Fisher up 28-22 going into the fourth.  Robertson then delivered a three-point-play on the first possession of quarter to give Fisher its biggest lead of the day at 33-22 with nine minutes left in regulation.

Union chipped away at the Fisher-lead and forced overtime with a basket with 11 seconds left in the fourth.

In overtime, Union led by as many as five points on two different occasions, but the Cardinals rallied in the closing moments to pull out the win.

For Fisher, Robertson finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Piacentini added 14 points and a team-high four assists.  Kelleher finished with eight points, while Jessica Rhone totaled six points and three blocked shots.

Reigle tallied four points and a career-high five steals.  Nicole Robinson snagged seven rebounds.
