The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team was defeated 60-59 by Heidelberg University on Sunday in the 33
rd Annual EC Tip Off Classic hosted by Emmanuel College. With the loss Fisher drops to 0-2 on the season.
Both teams fought hard thorough the first half, ending tied at 18-18 after six lead changes. The Cardinals took control in the second quarter, going on an 11-0 run over the Student Princes, sparked by freshman
Alex Reigle, who scored 5 points during the spurt.
Fisher produced its biggest lead of the game at nine points in the third quarter following a 3-pointer from Reigle, before ending the period up 50-44.
With 51 seconds remaining, the Cardinals found themselves down three points at 60-57 when
Emily Piacentini scored a layup to push Fisher to a one point deficit with 27 seconds left. Piacentini made one final attempt to capture the win, trying for a 3-pointer in the final second that hit the back of the rim, giving Heidelberg the 60-59 win.
Caroline Robertson and Reigle both finished with a team-high 15 points, while Piacentini scored nine.
Robertson also registered team-highs in steals (4) and rebounds (7).
Liga Kalnina recorded two blocks for the Cardinals.
Fisher returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to take on Union College.
