The St. John Fisher College field hockey program picked up a decisive win on Saturday, as the Cardinals came away with a 1-0 win over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology in matchup between two of the top teams in the Empire 8 Conference.
Both Fisher and Stevens entered Saturday's game with undefeated records in conference play. With the win, Fisher improves to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals have won a College-record nine straight games. This is all the fourth straight year in the program's six-year history that Fisher has reached double-digits in the win column.
After a scoreless first half, Fisher scored the game's only goal with 13 minutes left in regulation. Junior
Emily Markarian shot the ball and beat the goalie, but the shot hit off the post. Luckily for Fisher freshman
Kelly Bergamo was there to collect the rebound and tallied her seventh goal of the year and her third in the last three games.
Sophomore goalie
Ashley Maynard made three saves in net to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Fisher returns to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Union College.
