Cardinals Fall Short To Rochester In 3-2 Decision

The St. John Fisher volleyball team fell short in five sets to the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets on Friday after losing 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 12-25, 10-25, 4-15).

With the loss, Fisher falls to 4-3, while with the victory, Rochester advances to 4-2.

Fisher came out strong in the first set, commanding the court and winning 25-18. The Cardinals were back and forth with the Yellow Jackets until four consecutive Rochester errors widened the gap in Fisher's favor. Another four-point rally later in the set, accompanied by a service ace by Megan Miller, sealed the win for the Cardinals.

The second set was a tight battle but Fisher was able to edge the Yellow Jackets and take the set 25-22. Late in the game, a three-point rally coupled with a kill from Megan Miller assisted by Meghan Stonebarger put Fisher in the lead and Rochester could not recover in time.

A change in the Rochester lineup proved difficult for the Cardinals in the third set. The Yellow Jackets would go on to take this set 25-12. Rochester took an early lead with a five-point rally bringing the score to 11-4, which the Cardinals did not recover from.

Rochester came out early in the fourth set opening with a 5-0 lead.  An eight-point rally for the Yellow Jackets starting at 16-6 sealed the victory, bringing the match score to a tie at 2-2. The final set started with a ten-point opening rally by Rochester, a lead the Cardinals could not catch up with.

Fisher returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. when the Cardinals continue the University of Rochester Volleyball Invitational and take on Oswego State and Hamilton College.
