Softball Readies For Empire 8 Championship

The St. John Fisher College softball team looks to earn its fifth Empire 8 Championship in the program's history as it starts the four-team, double-elimination tournament on Friday.

Second-seeded Ithaca College takes on third-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology at 10 a.m. before the No. 4-seeded Cardinals face top seed and tournament host Alfred University at 12 p.m. on Harrington Field.

The winner of Game 1 will face the winner of Game 2 at 4:30 p.m., while the loser of Game 1 and the loser of Game 2 will play at 2:30 p.m. The title game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Fisher vs. Alfred

Fisher is back in the running for the Empire 8 Championship after not appearing last year for the first time in the program's history. The Cardinals have won the title four times with their most recent in 2013.

The Saxons will act as the No. 1 seed for the second time, but are still searching for their first Empire 8 Championship. It's their eighth straight appearance and ninth overall.

Fisher owns a 28-20 record in the tournament, with a 12-15 mark against the other teams in this year's championship. Against the Saxons, however, the Cardinals are 4-1 in tournament play.

During the regular season, Fisher fell twice to Alfred, losing 4-2 and 10-8. The doubleheader featured seven home runs – four from Alfred and three from Fisher. Recap, Box Scores.
