The St. John Fisher baseball team opened up the 2015 season with 6-5 loss to Concordia University Chicago in 12 innings, held in Auberndale, Florida.
With the loss, Fisher falls to 0-1 on the season while the Cougars improve to 1-0.
The visiting Cardinals went ahead 5-4 in the 11th thanks to Malcolm Kelsey starting off the inning with triple to left center. Kelsey was able to to score shortly after on a wild pitch to push the Cardinals ahead.
That lead would not last long, however, as the Cougars pushed their first two runners on in the bottom half. With runners on second and third Fisher recorded two outs, before a balk advanced the runner home to tie the game.
After Fisher left a runner on the in the 12th, the Cougars used a two-out rally to score the winning run. Thomas Gier singled with two outs and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. That allowed the next batter, Brent Spohr, to single up the middle to earn the victory.
Fisher started off quickly scoring three runs in the first. Shane Barley doubled to left center to score Jack Trotman and Cody Wiktorkski. One batter later, Calvin Woolhiser singled to score Barley.
The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the inning and the score would stay that way until the fifth, when Mike Roman hit in Trotman.
Concordia scored one one in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.
Marc Iseneker went 5.2 innings allowing one run on five hits, while striking out six. Â
Barley and Trotman each finished 2-for-5 for Fisher. Â
The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow for a double header, first against Gwynedd Mercy at 2:30 pm, followed by Eastern Mennonite University at 6 pm. Both games will be held at the Chain of Lakes Parks in Winter Haven, FL.Â
