The St. John Fisher College volleyball team lost 3-0 (24-26, 11-25, 18-25) to host SUNY Cortland on Wednesday in non-conference action.
The loss drops Fisher to 14-15 overall on the season while Cortland is now 17-15 following the win.
In the first set, the Cardinals found themselves down 12-9 early on before they managed to go on a 6-0 to take a 15-12 lead. The run was capped off by a
Madison Karwas kill that forced Cortland to call a timeout. Following the timeout, the Red Dragons went on a 6-3 run to tie the set up at 18 apiece. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, with Cortland taking the 26-24 edge.
The second set was not as closely contested as the Red Dragons jumped out to a quick 20-5 advantage on the Cardinals. Although Fisher took six of the next 11 points in the set, it was unable to make a comeback, ultimately falling 25-11 to go behind 2-0 in the match.
The Cardinals got off to a much better start in the third set, going up 3-1 early on behind two kills from
Megan Miller. Cortland and Fisher then went back and forth exchanging runs until the two were tied 13-13. That was when the Red Dragons took control of the set as they went on to take 12 out of the next 17 points win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Miller led the way for the Cardinals, totaling a team-high eight kills.
Meghan Stonebarger recorded 25 assists and nine digs in the contest while
Katie Mazierski tallied a team-high 22 digs.
The Cardinals will wrap up their 2015 season on Friday and Saturday as they head to Buffalo for the Buffalo State Invitational where they will take on Allegheny College, Buffalo State, and St. Lawrence University.
