The St. John Fisher College field hockey team fell 2-1 to Empire 8 opponent Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday at Growney Stadium.
With the loss, Fisher (10-5 overall) finishes its Empire 8 Conference Schedule with a record of 6-2. The Cardinals will be the second seed in the Empire 8 Conference Championships to be hosted by number one seed Ithaca College on November 6
th and 7
th.
Early in the first half, the Cardinals and the Presidents were locked in a defensive battle as there were no shots recorded in the first 10:26 of the half. Washington & Jefferson broke through less than four minutes later however, scoring in the 14
th minute to take a 1-0 lead that would hold until halftime.
In the second half, Fisher came out on the attack, taking four shots within the first five minutes of the period but were unable to score within that span.
Still trailing with less than five minutes left in the game, the Cardinals were finally able to find the back of the net as
Elizabeth Cusack ripped a shot in from the side of the net in the 66
th minute to tie the game 1-1.
Just as it appeared as if the contest was heading to overtime, a scramble in front of the Fisher net resulted in a Washington & Jefferson goal with just 15 seconds remaining. The Presidents would ultimately go on to earn the one-goal victory.
Emily Markarian tallied six shots in the contest while Cusack had two shots including her ninth goal of the season.
Danielle Famolaro started in net for Fisher, making five saves.
The Cardinals return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as they take on Oswego State in a non-conference game from Growney Stadium.
