The St. John Fisher College volleyball team lost 3-2 (28-26, 25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 9-15) to Utica College and 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 18-25, 16-25) to Elmira College at an Empire 8 Crossover event at Bobby Wanzer Court on Saturday.
With the pair of losses, the Cardinals fall to 10-11 overall and 1-5 in Empire 8 Conference action on the season.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they host The College at Brockport for Senior Night at Bobby Wanzer Court.
Utica 3 Fisher 2In the first set, the Cardinals found themselves down 20-16 before they rallied back to win the set 28-26 after back-to-back kills by
Megan Miller.
Fisher controlled much of the second set, taking an 11-7 lead when
Amanda Miller picked up a kill mid-way through the set. The Cardinals would go on to win the second set 25-21 after Utica made an attacking error to give Fisher the 2-0 advantage.
The contest turned in Utica's favor in the third and fourth sets as the Pioneers won a tight third set 25-22 before going on to win decisively in the fourth set, 25-14.
In the fifth and final set, Fisher and Utica battled back-and-forth as the set was tied on four different occasions, the last of which being 6-6 following an
Anna Marcy kill for Fisher. The Pioneers managed to outscore Fisher 9-3 the rest of the way to win the set 15-9, resulting in a 3-2 match loss for the Cardinals.
Megan Miller and Marcy led Fisher in the contest with 17 kills each while
Meghan Stonebarger posted a career-high 49 assists.
Elise Kruez tallied also tallied a career-high in digs, with 31.
Elmira 3 Fisher 1Fisher raced out to a 6-2 advantage in the first set following three early kills from Marcy. Elmira would respond however, taking a 9-8 lead just moments later. From that point on, the rest of the set belonged to the Soaring Eagles as they were able to outscore the Cardinals 16-8 to ultimately win the set 25-16.
In the second set, Fisher battled to an early 8-7 lead and despite Elmira responding with a two-point run to go up 9-8, a kill from Marcy sparked a 7-2 run to give the Cardinals a 15-11 lead. From there, Fisher was able to hold off the Soaring Eagles and took the set 25-20.
Momentum swung back in Elmira's favor after it took down Fisher 25-18 in the third set. The Soaring Eagles followed that up by winning the fourth set 25-16, taking down the Cardinals 3-1 in the match.
Once again Fisher was paced in the contest by Marcy and Miller who finished with 16 and 10 kills respectively. Stonebarger recorded 33 assists while
Katie Mazierski and Kruez tied for the team-lead in digs, with 20 each.
