The St. John Fisher College baseball team split a doubleheader with Stevens Institute of Technology this afternoon by taking game one 4-3, and surrendering the night cap 10-4. Fisher took three of four from the Ducks this weekend, giving the Cardinals sole possession of second place in the Empire 8 Conference Standings. With the split, Fisher is now 26-10 and 6-4 in the Empire 8 Conference standings.
Game One: Fisher 4, Stevens 3In the series' second game decided by just one run, the Cardinals used a sixth-inning rally to surge past the Ducks in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Starting pitcher
Shawn Corrigan faced early trouble after Stevens got on the board first with two runs on two hits in the top half of the first to take the 2-0 lead. After swapping runs in the bottom of the second and top of the third, both starting pitchers settled in, allowing just two hits over the next four frames.
With Fisher still trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals started the inning with six straight hitters reaching base.
Brad Rush led off with a single, and after
Malcolm Kelsey singled on a line drive to right field,
Mike Roman doubled into the left-center gap to score Rush and put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Both runners would later score when
Mike Fahy and
Chris Roeder reached on back-to-back errors from the Ducks, giving the Cardinals their first lead of the game, 4-3.
Starting pitcher
Shawn Corrigan threw a perfect seventh inning to secure the complete game victory. The Henrietta native allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits and recorded three strikeouts en route to his fifth win of the season. Corrigan improves to 5-1 on the campaign.
Game Two: Fisher 4, Stevens 10Trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning, Fisher went to work, scoring four runs on three hits to make it 5-4. Roeder reached first base to lead off the inning after being plugged in the back with a pitch and would be joined on base by the next batter,
Tim Coykendall after drawing a base on balls. Three straight singles by Fahy,
Nick Flemister and Rush plated Fisher's first two runs to make it 5-3 before Flemister crossed the plate after a groundout by Kelsey.
The rally would be short-lived, however, as the Ducks scored three more runs on three singles and a sacrifice fly to stretch their lead to 8-4.
After a scoreless home-half of the sixth, the Cardinals looked to return the favor in the top of the seventh, recording two quick outs, but Stevens would extend its lead to six runs after three straight hits before Fisher could escape any further harm.
Sean Badger took the loss for Fisher after giving up five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Cardinals will return to the field at 1 p.m. on Monday with a non-conference matchup at R.I.T. Fisher beat the Tigers earlier this season 11-7 at Dugan Yard.
