BOX SCOREThe St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team started slow and could never recover against one of the nation's top teams, as 10th-ranked Union College downed the Cardinals, 10-7, on Wednesday in Schenectady.
With the loss Fisher falls to 4-4 overall, while the Dutchmen move to 8-1.
Fisher struggled out of the gate, as Union led 4-0 after the opening quarter.
It was not until the 12:21 mark of the second quarter that Fisher scored its first goal coming from the hands of
Tim Wagner assisted by
Brett Farrell. However, that goal would be the Cardinals' only tally of the half and the Dutchmen would add two more goals to take a 6-1 margin into the break.
After a Union goal to start the third quarter,
Nick Rossi scored his eighth goal of the season to make it 7-2.
The Dutchmen expanded their lead to 9-2 with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Fisher showed some life to close out the quarter scoring the last two goals to bring Union's margin back to five at 9-4.
Taylor Muztafago scored with three minutes remaining and
Jeff Wester scored less than :30 seconds later on a feed from
Gary Bova.
Fisher wouldn't go away quietly as it would score three of the next four goals of the game to cut Union's lead to 10-7 with four minutes to play.
Michael Russell scored an unassisted goal at the 6:05 mark and added a man-up goal shortly after to make it 10-6. Bova added another man-up goal for Fisher with just under five minutes to play but that is as close as the Cardinals would come.
Freshman
Tanner Swan made eight saves in net for Fisher.
Fisher will host Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
