The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College football team (3-1, 2-1) will look to rebound this week when it hosts Empire 8 foe Hartwick College (2-2, 1-1) at 1 p.m. Fisher lost last week to Salisbury University in the squad's final Empire 8 meeting, 37-34 in overtime, to fall to 0-6 all-time against the Sea Gulls.
No. 15 Fisher held a 31-24 advantage with just under six minutes remaining in the game, however Salisbury marched down the field for the game-tying score with 18 seconds left on the clock. Following a Fisher field goal on their first possession of the overtime period, J.D. Hook found the endzone for the Sea Gulls to earn the 37-34 win.
Nathan Nigolian and
Mike Collichio each hauled in two touchdown passes in the loss. Nigolain now has scored a pair of touchdowns in three of the first four games of the year and currently sits at 100 career receptions.
Hartwick is riding a big 34-30 come-from-behind win over Alfred University last weekend. The Hawks trailed 30-28 after an Alfred touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, however, quarterback John Garcia connected with Tanner Williams for a 21-yard touchdown reception for what would prove to be the go-ahead score with 3:57 remaining in the game. Williams ranks seventh in the nation in reception yards with 598 on the season.
Last season, Fisher dropped the Hawks 37-14 on the road including registering a school-record 11 sacks. Dating back to 2010, Fisher has amassed 25 sacks and 16 interceptions against Hartwick. The Cardinals tallied a school-record eight interceptions against the Hawks in 2010.
