The St. John Fisher College field hockey team set a new College record for wins in a season on Saturday, as the Cardinals picked up their 11
th victory of the year in a 2-1 win at Washington & Jefferson College.
With the win, Fisher improves to 11-5 overall and 7-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.
The Cardinals, competing in just their fourth season as an NCAA Division III program, have secured at least the No. 2 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Championship. They will play at Utica College (14-1, 7-0) next Saturday with the victor winning the Empire 8 regulars-season title and earning the rite to host the Empire 8 Championship.
The winner of the Empire 8 Championship will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Fisher took the lead for good early in as
Elizabeth Cusack scored her 14
th goal of the season off a pass from
Stacie Skidmore in the game's fourth minute.
Skidmore picked her second assist of the day nearly 15 minutes later.
Emily Markarian finished the 2-on-1 break with a shot into the far corner for her team-leading 16
th goal of the year to put her team up, 2-0.
The Presidents got on the board with just over 11 minutes left in the regulation, but goalie
Danielle Famolaro, who finished with two saves, kept W&J at bay for the remainder of the game.
Fisher finished the game with a 14-5 advantage in shots and held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at SUNY Geneseo.
