Women's Basketball Cruises Past Stevens for First Conference Win

BOX SCORE

Sydney Bloomstein scored a season-high 17 points as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball picked up a conference win after defeating Stevens Institute of Technology 74-58 Saturday afternoon at Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium.

The Ducks were first to strike, opening up an early 10-6 lead before back-to-back baskets by Bloomstein and Portia Velasco knotted things up at 10-10.

Stevens would again take a four-point lead, only to watch it quickly disappear as Mary Kate Cusack converted a four-point play, which ignited a spark in the Cardinals.

Fisher caught fire from the floor, burying shot after shot including three from distance en route to a 24-9 run that stretched over seven minutes of play.  As the halftime horn sounded, the Cardinals went into the locker room holding a 37-20 advantage.

Fisher continued to apply the pressure in the opening minutes of the second half.  Bloomstein found a cutting McKenzie Bezon for a quick bucket as the Cardinals opened up another run, this time outscoring the visiting Ducks 8-2 as Fisher held a 45-22 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining in the contest.

As the half wore on, both teams continued to battle until the Cardinals opened up a 29-point margin, courtesy of a 13-2 run capped by another Bezon layup.

Stevens would battle back, however, using a 20-4 run to dwindle Fisher's lead to 11 points with two minutes left to play, but it was not to be as the Cardinals went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe to earn the win.

Fisher, now 8-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play drained eight three-pointers on the night and forced Stevens into 26 turnovers.

Cusack had 15 points in the win including three from downtown.  Velasco notched 14 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Camaryn Buckner poured in nine points and accounted for nine boards.

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. on Friday when it hosts Ithaca College.
