The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team saw its first Empire 8 Conference loss on Sunday, falling 15-9 to the No. 13 Ithaca College Bombers. It was a marquee matchup, as the two teams met in the 2012 Empire 8 Conference Championship, with the Cardinals coming out victorious. However, the Cardinals had a different outcome in Sunday's rematch.
Fisher opened the scoring, but Ithaca scored the final eight goals of the first half to take an 11-3 lead that the Cardinals were unable to overcome.
Taylor Hughes scored with 18:26 to play in that half, putting Fisher up 3-2 but the Cardinals wouldn't score for the remainder of the stanza. The Bomber defense held the Cardinals scoreless for just over 20 minutes, crossing into the second half of play.
With the score 13-4, Fisher made a run with four-straight goals to cut the Ithaca lead to five.
Melissa Leonhard got is started and three-straight goals from Hughes followed, but the Bombers allowed just one more over the remaining minutes.
Hughes led Fisher with five points on four goals and one assist. Leonhard finished with three goals and an assist, while
Erin Ward ended with two goals and a helper as well.
Logan Barnard scooped up a game-high five ground balls in the defeat.
Jess Worthman made 11 saves for the Bombers after Fisher led 24-21 in shots.
All three Cardinal goaltenders saw time with
Nicole Hart picking up two saves in her 26 minutes of play.
The Cardinals will play their final home game on Saturday, hosting East Avenue rival Nazareth College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
