The St. John Fisher College baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Houghton College with two shutout wins in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Dugan Yard. Fisher is now 22-12 on the year while the Highlanders fall to 13-17. The Cardinals will return to action at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday when it hosts The College at Brockport in a nonconference game.
Ben Bostick reached a milestone in the first game of the doubleheader, collecting a single for his 200th career hit. Bostick is only the fourth player in program history to reach that mark. He currently sits in third place all-time, passing Chris Botsford in the second game with 203rd hit. Bostick needs three more hits to surpass All-American
Steve Karnyski (205). Andy Campbell holds the Fisher record with 225 career hits.
Game One – Fisher 4, Houghton 0:
Mike Rynerson got the start for the Cardinals, throwing a complete-game shutout to earn his fourth win of the year. Rynerson is perfect on the year with a 4-0 mark, allowing just four hits on Saturday while striking out three.
Fisher scored its first run when
Nick Flemister led off the second inning with a triple and was driven in by
Sean Osterman's sacrifice fly in the very next at-bat.
The Cardinals added another in the third, when
Mike Roman led off with a single and was driven in a few batters later by a
Chris Roeder double down the left field line.
Shane Barley drove in
Brad Rush with a double to right in the sixth inning. Time Coykendall also got an RBI in the inning, scoring Barley on an infield single to the shortstop for Fisher's final run of the contest.
Roman and Coykendall led the way, each finishing with two hits.
Game Two – Fisher 7, Houghton 0:
Fisher staffed a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the second game with the Highlanders.
Ryan Trauger improved to 2-0 on the season, taking a no-no into the fifth inning before Houghton had to bunt for a hit. The lefty threw 4.1 innings of one-hit baseball while fanning two Highlanders.
Jordan Doroshenko and
Corey Upright combined to close out the game over the last two innings. Both pitched perfect baseball, neither allowing a hit or walk while Upright struck out one batter.
At the plate, Bostick and Flemister both went 3-for-3, with Bostick scoring three times while Flemister drove in two runs and scored another. Roeder also had three hits in the outing, crossing the plate twice.
Osterman finished 1-for-3 with two RBI off a single down the left-field line in the third. Barley drove in a run for Fisher while
Dave VanGorder scored after reaching on an error.
