Stefanon Leads Cardinals in Sweep of Brockport

The St. John Fisher College softball team picked up two wins over The College at Brockport behind the arm of Sarah Stefanon, who racked up 26 strikeouts on the day.  Fisher improves to 21-11 with the sweep, while nonconference opponent Brockport falls to 14-11.

Game One: Fisher 2, Brockport 1 (8 innings)

Brockport scored its only run of the day in the third inning of game one to go up 1-0, the Golden Eagles only lead of the day.

In the top of the seventh inning, freshman Olivia Fusilli hit a solo shot to center field, tying the game at 1s.  Stefanon then induced a pop-out, a ground out and a strike out in the bottom of the inning to force extras.

The Cardinals wasted no time in the eighth as Kayla Goodberlet hit Fisher's second home run of the game which produced the game-winning run.
Fisher recorded just five hits in the game, with four coming in the final two innings.  Stefanon sent 16 down on strikes, with just one hit and one walk.  Brockport's lone run of the day came unearned.

Game Two: Fisher 3, Brockport 0

The second game of the day, like the first, was close throughout as the Cardinals did not pull away until the final two innings.  After five-scoreless innings, the Cardinals posted their first two runs in the sixth inning with Sarah Fordyce starting things with a home run.  After Christina Sakran pinch ran for Kaylee Tallman, who singled on, she was eventually able to score on Brockport's second wild pitch of the inning.

Fordyce picked up an RBI in the seventh when she singled in Jessie Smyrski from third base, making the game 3-0.

Stefanon went back-to-back in the circle, as she recorded another double-digit strikeout performance. The senior tallied 10 strikeouts and scatted three hits in seven innings.

Fordyce totaled four hits on the day, while Smyrski and Leanne Merchant connected on three.

The Cardinals will return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday when they travel down East Avenue to face Empire 8 member Nazareth in a doubleheader.
