Cardinals Take Down Allegheny Under the Lights

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College baseball team took down Allegheny College 5-2 on Wednesday night at Russell Diethrick Field, home of Sinlge-A New York Penn League member Jamestown Jammers, in Jamestown, NY. With the win, the Cardinals moves to 16-9 on the season while Allegheny falls to 16-8.

Fisher got on the board in the first when Brad Rush doubled off the high part of the left field fence, driving in Ben Bostick, who led off with a walk and stole second base. Nick Flemister drove in Rush in the very next at-bat, singling down the left field line.

The Cardinals added two more in the third, this time with Mike Fahy driving in the runs. With two outs, Fahy teed off on a pitch, driving the ball into left field. Fahy drove in Rush and Sean Osterman before ending the inning by being thrown out at second trying to stretch the single into a double.

Ryan Smith got the start and win for Fisher, pitching a solid three innings. Smith was overpowering, as he did not allow a hit until there was two outs in the third. The hit came on a ground ball between second and first. Mike Roman, the Cardinals' second baseman, made a great diving stop but the throw was deemed just late by the umpire on a bang-bang play.

Aaron Benton relieved Smith for the fourth inning and got some help from his teammates to get out of a jam. With one out and runners on second and third, Benton induced a flyout to left field. Bryant Moore, who replaced Fahy in the top of the fourth, showed his defensive prowess, catching the fly ball and gunning the runner trying for home plate. Moore's throw got to the catcher on the fly, with Flemister inching up the line to block the plate, absorb the collision and tag the runner out, effectively ending the inning.

Left-handed pitcher Ryan Trauger relieved Benton in the next inning, throwing the fifth and sixth innings. In the two scoreless innings pitched, Trauger surrendered just one base hit while striking out three.

The Gators finally got on the board in the seventh, but Fisher answered back. After Allegheny posted two in the top, it elected to intentionally walk Brad Rush with two outs in the bottom, as first base was open with Roeder on second.

The Gators then made a pitching change, relieving their starter as the Cardinals' season-high batting average came to the plate, represented by Flemister. Flemister needed just one pitch to make Allegheny pay, singling up the middle to score Roeder from second, giving Fisher a 5-2 advantage.

Thomas Dybas came in to pitch the eighth and the ninth for Fisher, making easy work of Allegheny. Dybas earned the save by throwing two scoreless innings of two-hit ball with one stikeout.

The Cardinals will return to action this weekend for an important four-game series with Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College. Saturday's doubleheader has a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
