Baseball Splits with Case Western in a Sunday Doubleheader

The St. John Fisher College baseball team split with Case Western Reserve University in a Sunday doubleheader at Dugan Yard. With the split, Fisher is now 15-9 on the season while Case is 17-8. The Cardinals will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as it hosts Allegheny College in Jamestown, NY.

Game One – Fisher 3, Case Western Reserve 1:

Fisher used a three-run second inning to power past Case in game one of the doubleheader. Trailing 1-0 after starting pitcher Justin D'Amato walked in a run in Case's offensive half inning, the Cardinals' bats awoke for the first time this weekend.

Nick Flemister walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Creenan stepped to the plate with two outs and crushed a double to right field, scoring Flemister to knot the game at 1-1. Mike Roman then walked before Cody Wiktorski, in his first career start, singled to right centerfield to drive in the game-winning run as Creenan scored from second. Roman, who advanced to third on the Wiktorski single, scored during the next at-bat as Ben Bostick singled through the right side to make the score 3-1.

D'Amato earned his fifth win of the season after going six-innings and scattering six hits. The junior struck out four batters while only surrendering one run. Jordan Doroshenko relieved D'Amato in the seventh for a matchup with a left-handed batter. The Cardinals' lefty induced a line out to right, as Bostick tracked the ball for the out on what was a 3-2 count.

Fisher then brought in right-hander Shawn Corrigan for the final two outs, giving up two hits before closing out the game and earning the save.

Bostick and Wiktorski led the Cardinals at the dish, each finishing with two hits and a RBI. Flemister, Creenan and Sean Osterman finished with the other three hits for Fisher, with Creenan driving in the Cardinals other run.

Game Two – Case 8, Fisher 4:

Fisher scored first in the second inning when Flemister led off with a single and was driven in three batters later on a Roman sacrifice fly. Case answered, however, with a single run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 advantage.

Brad Rush came through in the bottom of the fifth, plating Tim Coykendall and Bostick with a one-out single to knot the score at 3-3. Coykendall led off the inning with a walk and Bostick followed that with a single to right field.

The Spartans put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring five runs to take a 8-3 lead. Fisher plated one more run in the sixth when Bostick drove in Chris Roeder, who singled to center to lead off the inning.

Mike Rynerson got the start and pitched five solid innings, allowing three runs on five hits and left the game with the score tied. Erin Moskal relieved Rynerson and got two quick outs in the sixth before he let up three hits that led to four runs and earned the decision. Teddy Ruff and Zach Weaver closed out the last inning and a third, with Ruff letting up a run in the sixth.

Bostick continued a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brad Rush also had three hits on four at-bats with two RBI. Flemister, Barley and Roeder had Fisher's other three base knocks.
