Cardinals' Defense Holds Strong; Fisher Defeats Birmingham Southern

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team concluded its spring break trip with a 7-4 win over Birmingham Southern at Lambert High School.  With Friday night's win, Fisher improves to 3-1 on the year while Birmingham Southern falls to 2-4.

After scoring 17 goals in the first half of Tuesday's game against Piedmont College (and 22 total), the tone of Friday's game was much different.  Fisher was held to just three goals in the first 30 minutes, with one each coming from Jeff Wester, Michael Russell and Brett Farrell.

But the Cardinals held the majority of possession in the second half and held the Panthers scoreless in the second half to rally to victory.

Wester and Michael Boisvert connected twice in the second stanza on nearly identical plays, with Wester feeding.  The junior found Boisvert both times at the edge of the crease, setting up two easy quick-stick goals.

Wester would go on to lead Fisher with five points on two goals and three assists.  Bryan Dyer also scored a goal for the Cardinals.

The game was a penalty-filled affair, with 12 infractions called between the two teams, but Fisher was the only to capitalize with Boisvert's first of two goals.

The Cardinals controlled all aspects of the game, outshooting the Panthers 40-23 and owning face-offs, 11-for-15. Ryan Freije won all 11.

Jamie Campagna finished with 12 saves for his third win of the season.

The Cardinals will return to New York for their next game, hosting a 4 p.m. contest with Brockport on Tuesday.
