The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team took down Houghton College 71-49 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Fisher improves to 12-8 on the year and Houghton falls to 0-18.
The Highlanders are a provisional member of the Empire 8 Conference and are not eligible for postseason play. Wins or losses against the team do not count towards Empire 8 Conference standings.
The Cardinals scored the first nine points of the contest and held the Highlanders to only 16 to hold a 37-16 at the half. However, the visitors came out of the break strong, and went on an 11-2 run over the first five minutes, cutting the lead to 44-33, before forcing a Fisher timeout.
But Fisher responded to the Houghton run with one of their own, breaking out to a 28-point lead with just under eight minutes to play. The Cardinals used an 18-1 run over a 5:27 span that was highlighted by a fast-break dunk from senior
Justin Plata.
The Cardinals would go on to extend that lead to 30 points, their largest of the game.
Plata paced Fisher on the day, finishing with a team-high 18 points and four steals.
Thad Wier also came away with four steals to go along with 13 points.
The Cardinals will have nearly a week break, before traveling to face Elmira College at 8 p.m. on Friday.
