Stevens Rallies to Beat Cardinals in Fifth Overtime of Season

HTML BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell 78-67 to Stevens Institute in its fifth overtime game in its last six games.  With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-10 on the year and 2-4 in the Empire 8 Conference.  Stevens improves to 7-6, 4-1 with the home win.

The Cardinals held a six-point lead, up 61-55 with 20 seconds to play in the game, but the home Ducks rallied to tie the game at 61s to send it to extra time.  Molly Spadaro made a lay-up with 10 seconds to play, cutting the game to 61-57, but was fouled on the effort by Mary Kate Cusack, and the guard completed the three-point play.

Cusack was fouled by Stevens on the ensuing possession but couldn't knock down either of her free throw efforts and, after a defensive rebound, Spadaro nailed a three-pointer to even the game.

The Ducks wasted no time in the extra minutes, as they broke out on an 11-0 run before Cusack scored the Cardinals first points of OT, but the deficit was too big to recover from.

Fisher held the lead for most of the contest, with an advantage on the scoreboard for 65.1% of the game, which saw nine ties and five lead changes.  The Cardinals also held a double-digit lead in the second half, up 11 points at 47-36 with 8:56 to play.

However, the team shot just 33.3% from the floor compared to Stevens 53.7%.  The Ducks also out rebounded the Cardinals 51-30 and scored 17 second chance points.

The team was led by Cusack, who scored a career-high 19 points in the outing.  Portia Velasco and Brooke Seavitt also finished in double digits in the scoring column, netting 14 and 10 points respectively.  Velasco also had seven assists and four steals in the game.

Fisher will return home on Tuesday, facing East Avenue rival Nazareth College at 6 p.m. on Bobby Wanzer Court.
