BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the visiting Dutchwomen of Union College on Sunday afternoon at Growney Stadium. Fisher is now 4-4-3 on the year while Union improved to 9-1. Union has been a nationally-ranked team this year, and was recently No. 17 until it was knocked off by RIT last week. The Dutchwomen are currently receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll.
Fisher played pretty evenly in the second half, taking as many shots as its opponent (9-9) and taking just one-less corner kick than Union (5-4). The damage was done, however, in the first half, as the Cardinals gave up two goals in the first 20 minutes of play.
Mollie Gilchrist scored the first goal at 3:37 after she settled a rebound that rattled off the crossbar from a Jennifer Mansfield shot. Just under 15 minutes later, Mansfield tallied her own score on a breakaway after a pass from Melissa Mansfield.
Sydney DeVitto started in net for the Cardinals and played pretty solid all afternoon, collecting six saves including a brilliant diving stop late in the second half. Union keeper Kayla Marti stopped five shots in the shutout.
Heather Konieczny led Fisher with five shots, two of which were on goal, while nine other Cardinals tallied a shot apiece.
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. at Utica College next Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference matchup after taking a five-day layoff during the work week. The Cardinals are currently 1-0-2 in conference play.
