The St. John Fisher College softball team will make its fifth appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship at 4 p.m. today.
Fisher (33-12) is the No. 6 seed in the eight-team regional and will play No. 3 University of Rochester (28-13). The double-elimination tournament will be hosted by top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State in Willimantic, CT. The winner will play at 6 p.m. on Friday against the winner of No. 2 Tufts versus No. 7 Salem St. The two losing teams will play an elimination game at 12 p.m. on Friday.
Fisher earned one of 18 at-large bids from the NCAA Selection Committee, marking the second time the Cardinals have earned an at-large bid. In 2001, the softball team received an at-large bid to make it to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Fisher's other three appearance have come as a result of winning the Empire 8's automatic bid by winning the conference's tournament championship. This is the Cardinals fourth appearance in the NCAAs in the last five years.
