The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team defeated the visiting Hartwick College Hawks by a 19-5 score on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. The win was Fisher's third-straight in Empire 8 play, pushing the Cardinal's record to 5-1 and 10-4 on the season. With the loss, Hartwick falls to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the Conference.
The win also guarantees the Cardinals a spot in the Empire 8 Championship.
Melissa Leonhard and Taylor Hughes led the way for the Cardinals, both tallying seven points on the day. Leonhard found twine a career-high seven times for all her points while Hughes also set a career record with five assists paired with her two goals.
The game was held scoreless for nearly the first 10 minutes before Bridget Alberts tallied one off a feed from Hughes. After Mary Kate Edmunds added the Cardinals second goal on a free position, Alberts tallied again for her second of four goals.
Hartwick responded with a goal, but it would be its only of the half as Fisher went on an eight-goal streak that spanned from the 13:58 mark of the first half to the 26:07 mark of the second. Leonhard scored five of the eight goals in that streak, while Emily Bryerton, Hughes and Lindsey Shoales also connected to make it 11-1.
After Hartwick added a second goal, the Cardinals went on another tear, this time adding seven goals to push the lead to 18-2. Hartwick scored three of the game's final four goals, but the Hawks couldn't muster up enough momentum to threaten the hosts.
Allison Brady also recorded two points for Fisher on a goal and an assist, while Jill Zerrillo and Tori Suto scored a goal. Blythe Sheridan picked up her first assist of the season in the contest as well.
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it travels to Nazareth College to face the Empire 8 and East Avenue foe Golden Flyers.
