Cardinals Get Revenge with Sweep of Ithaca, Including Two Walk-Offs

Chris Roeder singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to complete the weekend sweep of Ithaca.
The St. John Fisher College baseball team took two against Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon at Dugan Yard to complete the three-game series sweep of the Bombers, earning revenge after being swept in Ithaca earlier this season. With thw wins, the Cardinals move to 22-8 on the season and 7-4 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Ithaca falls to 18-8-1, 8-4.

Chris Roeder singled up the middle to score Ben Ward in the 10th inning of the second game to give the Cardinals their second walk-off against the Bombers this weekend, winning 6-5. Fisher walked-off on Friday when Ward scored Peter Krysztof for the game's only run in a contest dominated by pitching.

Game One – Fisher 4, Ithaca 0 (Seven Innings):

Starting pitcher Jason Beaumont threw a complete-game two-hit shutout to move to 5-3 on the year. The senior was able to overcome three Fisher errors and five walks by inducing double plays while striking out seven Bombers. Beaumont struck out the final two Ithaca batters looking, a fitting end to a great performance.

Fisher got all it would need and then some in the first inning. Steve Karnyski led off with a double to left center and Krysztof followed with a bunt that stopped dead on the first base line's chalk for a base hit. With runners on the corners, Sean Osterman stepped to the dish and singled to left field to drive in Karnyski from the third, which was eventual game-winning run.

Ward continued the inning with a sacrifice bunt to Krysztof to third and Osterman into scoring position. Ithaca then chose to intentionally walk Ben Bostick to get to Matt Klock, the Cardinals five-hitter. Klock made the Bombers pay, singling through the left side, driving in Osterman and Krysztof to give Fisher the 3-0 lead.

Brad Rush joined in the fun, knocking in Bostick with a single up the middle for the Cardinals' last run of the first inning and of the game.
Karnyski led the team with two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. The senior was robbed twice by the third basemen, lining out on a rope and being stopped by a backhand pick and gun to first. Klock led the Cardinals with two RBI.

Game Two – Fisher 6, Ithaca 5 (10 Innings):

With the bases loaded and one out, Roeder singled up the middle just out of reach of a diving second baseman, allowing Ward to score from third for the game-winner.

After Ward hit a leadoff single to center field, Coach Brandon Potter pulled out all the stops, pinch hitting Dave VanGorder to sacrifice bunt. VanGorder reached on a fielder's choice as the third baseman tried to get the lead runner at second. VanGorder was then relieved by pinch runner Parker Ross.

Klock struckout swinging to give the Bombers an out but Ryan Shaughnessy had a great at-bat and worked a walk on a full count to load the bases.

The Cardinals trailed 4-1 in the before scoring four runs to earn back the lead at 5-4. Roeder led off that inning with a double to left center before Karnyski reached on an error by the shortstop.

Krysztof also reached on an error by the catcher when the fielder threw the ball shortto first on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Osterman then reached on a fielder's choice. Krysztof was out at second on the play but he slid hard, throwing the second baseman off kilter, leading to an errant throw on the double play attempt, allowing both Roeder and Karnyski to cross the plate, making the score 4-3 Ithaca.

Bostick got in the batter's box and sent the crowd in a frenzy, hitting a shot over the bullpen door in right field for an opposite field, two-run bomb, putting the Cardinals up 5-4.

Ithaca tied the game in the top of the ninth when Tom Dybas induced a grounder to short but Fisher could not complete the double play with bases loaded and one out, allowing the runner at third to score.

Tim Johnson started for the Cardinals and earned the no-decision as he went five and two-thirds innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, both unearned.

Thomas Dybas relieved Johnson with two outs in the sixth and went three and one-third innings, allowing just a hit but three runs, only one of which was earned.

Tim Sylvester was the next pitcher out of the pen, working a perfect 10th inning, striking out the side, two batters swinging and the final hitter looking. Sylvester was the pitcher of record when Fisher walked-off in the bottom of the 10th, earning the win to move to 2-1 on the year.

Bostick led the Cardinals with three hits while Roeder finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Ward was also 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Fisher returns to action at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday when it faces The College at Brockport in Brockport. The Golden Eagles beat the Cardinals 9-6 at Dugan Yard earlier this season, making Wednesday's contest of high importance for regional ranking purposes.
