Baseball Grinds Out a Win at Stevens Behind Strong Pitching

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College baseball team took today's single nine-inning game 3-2 against the host Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Chris Roeder had the important hit, doubling to right center in the fourth to score Fisher's final two runs, including the game-winner. The Cardinals are now 18-8 on the season with a 4-4 mark in the Empire 8 Conference.

Fisher scored its first run in the third inning when Sean Osterman plated Roeder with a fielder's choice.

Roeder then crushed the double in the fourth, scoring Brad Rush and Ben Ward. Ward led off the inning with a walk and Rush walked two batters later as Ben Bostick sacrifice bunted to move Ward to second in the previous at bat.

Tim Johnson started on the hill for the Cardinals, lasting six and two-thirds innings, allowing just five hits and a run while striking out four. Johnson went six scoreless innings and fanned two in the seventh, but after two walks in the inning, Ryan Trauger was brought out of the bullpen for the final out. Trauger let up a single to right field, allowing Stevens to get its first run of the day.

Matt Mika came in for the eighth but gave up two hits and a run before being replaced by Thomas Dybas with two outs. Dybas, for the second-straight day, closed out the game to earn his second save. The freshman pitched one and a third innings of perfect baseball with a strikeout.

Roeder, Matt Klock, Steve Karnyski and Peter Krysztof each finished with two hits, with Roeder leading the team with the two RBI.

Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when its travels crosstown to face out-of-conference foe University of Rochester. After trailing 4-0 on March 28th, the Cardinals rallied for nine-straight runs to defeat the Yellowjackets at Dugan Yard.
