Karnyski and Crew Crush Husson

Ben Bostick and Steve Karnyski combined for eight hits in Wednesday 24-3 win over Husson.
The St. John Fisher College baseball team routed Husson University 24-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Winter Haven, FL at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. With the win the Cardinals are 6-2 on the season.

Steve Karnyski took control of the game from the opening when head coach Brandon Potter made a tweak to the lineup, moving the usual cleanup hitter to the lead off slot. On the first pitch of the game Karnyski took the pitcher deep to left field for a solo home run. That was the first hit of a 5-for-5 day for the senior, who also added two doubles and two singles along with a walk. It was also the first hit of 24 for the Cardinals on the day, who scored six runs in the fourth and eighth innings, five in the ninth, three in the first and third and one in the second.

Karnyski drove in five runners while scoring three himself, which was not best on the day as Ben Bostick crossed the plate four times. Bostick went 3-for-6 on the day, along with a walk, earning two RBI.

Right fielder Matt Klock had the second-most hits with Sean Osterman and Bostick in the game for Fisher, going 3-for-5, including a two-run home run in the first inning. Klock finished with three RBI and two runs scored while drawing a base on balls.

Teammate Sean Osterman faced brand new pitchers twice in the game, tripling down the left field line off the first and singling through the left side to drive in two-runs off the second. The junior finished 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and three runs scored.

All-in-all Fisher used 18 position players in the game, 15 of which reached base at some point in the game. The Cardinals had 50 at-bats in the game and were able to reach base 35 times.

Zach Weaver got the start for Fisher, going six innings of five-hit ball, giving up just two walks and three runs while fanning eight Husson batters on the way to his first win of the year. Jordan Doroshenko came in for relief in the seventh, going through the lineup 1-2-3 without a hit, run or base on balls. Kieran Murphy closed out the game, pitching the eighth and ninth, giving up no hits, just one walk while striking out two.

Fisher hit five home runs in the game, including a shot by Brad Rush. Most impressively were reserve players Corey Upright and Eric Luisi, who hit bck-to-back jacks in the ninth inning. Upright was a replacement for Karnyski at first while Luisi replaced Peter Krysztof at third. Krysztof kept his trend of getting on base, going 1-for-3 with two walks.

After the back-to-back home runs in the ninth, Matthew Cahill hit a shot into left center that resulted in a triple. Keeping with the back-to-back theme in the inning, Bostick stepped to the plate next and hit a shot to center that let him collect three bases and drive in Cahill.

The Cardinals also stole five bags on the day.

Fisher will return to action at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday when it faces Aurora University at the Chain of Lakes Park.
