Softball Splits Day Three in Tucson

The St. John Fisher College softball team had a 1-1 day at the Tucson Invitational with an early morning loss to No. 9 Coe College followed by an afternoon victory against Loras College, both of Iowa.  The two games push Fisher to .500 on the season with a 3-3-0 record.

In the day's first game Coe College completed the season sweep of the Cardinals, picking up three-consecutive wins against Fisher over a two-day span as the Cardinals were defeated 5-0 and 3-2 by Coe on Sunday.  Unfortunately, Monday's game was not as close as the previous two, with the Kohawks defeating Fisher 13-1 in six innings.

Fisher's lone run of the game came when Megan Rogers, who was sitting at second, crossed the plate on a center field single by Megan Zoerb.  Rogers reached base after singling to right field in her lone at bat of the game and advancing to second on a passed ball.  The run made the score 7-1 at the time.

Coe got on the board early if not often, with a four-run first inning against Fisher's starting pitcher Sarah Stefanon.  A three-run home run by Coe's Callie Morningstar jumpstarted the team's spurt, and it was followed by an error from Fisher's Kelly Jones which resulted in a runner at first.  That runner eventually made it to third base and was brought in on a one-out sacrifice fly to left field.

After adding single runs in the second and fourth inning, Coe exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to seal the game.  A two-run home run made the score 9-1, while a single and a double brought in two more scores.  Coe added a two-out run to reach the final score of 13-1.

Freshman Lauren Wesolowski replaced Stefanon in the second inning, with the starter picking up her first loss of the season.

The Cardinals totaled five hits in the game with Zoerb going 2-for-3 from the plate and recording Fisher's only RBI of the day.

Box Score: Coe 13, Fisher 1

In Fisher's second game of the day, the team bounced back strong and controlled the contest for a 3-0 victory over the Loras College Duhawks.  Danielle Leone picked up her second win of the season with a two-hit shutout.

Zoerb and Rogers teamed up again for Fisher's first run of the game when Zoerb earned an RBI for an infield fly that brought Roger's in from third.

The Cardinals final two runs came on home runs from Leanne Merchant and Carissa Carlson, who both knocked the ball over the left field fence in their respective solo shots.  Merchant's homer came in the fourth while Carlson connected in the sixth inning on her third and final at bat.

Leone pitched a stellar game on the mound, totaling seven strikeouts, no walks and only two hits in the matchup.

Box Score: Fisher 3, Loras 0

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday when they face Pitt-Bradford then Medaille College in Tucson, Ariz.  The Cardinals will play the tandem again on Thursday afternoon.
