Softball Swept by No. 9 Coe College

The St. John Fisher College softball team fell to 2-2 on the season with two losses to No. 9 Coe College tonight in Tucson, Arizona.  The Cardinals were shutout in the first game by a 5-0 score, but saw a much tighter battle in game two with a 3-2 result.

Coe pitcher Ashlee Simon was dialed in during the night's opener, allowing just one hit to the Cardinals in the meeting.  Simon, who saw 23 batters, struck out a total of 17 and allowed just one hit.  Senior Jennifer Vanek recorded that strike, a single up the middle in the 6th inning.  However, that was the only time the Cardinals would touch a base in the game.

The Kohawks scored three runs in the second inning, with two coming on a ground-rule double.  The third run came after a Fisher throwing error, as the Coe batter reached first base and scored her runner at third.

Danielle Leone pitched all seven innings for Fisher, recording two strike outs and allowing six hits in the first meeting.

Game One: Coe 5, Fisher 0

The second game had a much different vibe, with Fisher controlling the tempo for the majority of the contest.  However, the sixth inning proved detrimental to the Cardinals who were up 1-0 entering the inning. Coe scored three runs in the stanza to take the lead, and Fisher was unable to erase the deficit in its seventh-inning opportunity.

Fisher got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Vanek sent a long ball to right center which went for a triple.  Megan Zoerb brought in Vanek with a hot shot up the middle for the RBI.  The Cardinals were able to add another run in the top of the 7th inning, when Kelly Jones singled to right field, but the Cardinals could not overcome the two-run hole.

Pitcher Sarah Stefanon struck out five in the effort, while Zoerb and Jennifer Martin each registered two hits.

Game Two: Coe 3, Fisher 2

The two teams will square-off for the third time in two days at 11 a.m. (EST) on Monday.  Following that game, Fisher will face Loras College.
